Stem Ciders asked us to create soaps for their 4 most popular hard ciders. We were so excited to try! Hard cider is an up and coming concept. We created these colorful soaps and stamped them with the Stem logo Apple. We were delighted at the results! The soaps are on sale at both Stem Cider locations in Colorado.
Its been half a year since I wrote last! So much has happened in that time out! From the Bacon and Beer fest we were selected to be the only soap vendor at The Great American Beer Fest. We went into overdrive because the GABF is 65,000 attendees! We had to make soap and make soap and make soap! From there we slipped into autumn and on to Christmas! We have finished all of our Christmas Shows and now are closed until mid-January.

Hopefully I will have time to keep up!
Today we set up our mini-shop in a new space at Cherry Creek Mall (Denver) called The District Shops. This is a space for hand crafted items created by artisans from the greater Denver area. FSW will be located on the Main Floor – The Marketplace! This area will be broken into 5 “Districts”. Each district will have a unique background, unique look, and unique products. Districts include Food District, Vintage District, Boutique District, 5280 District (Colorado products), Little District (Kids products), Spa District, and Gentlemen’s District. FSW will feature all of our gentlemen’s products, beer soaps and little gentlemen’s products. This is our first foray into a brick and mortar enclosure. As you are probably aware, we have our Shopify web page and we participate in many weekend shows, but now we will have a permanent outlet for many of our products!
The District Shops will open officially on June 1. Please drop into this new facility inside the Cherry Creek Mall and check out our products and other products created by our fellow Colorado artisans
Here in Colorado, one of the most vital and innovative industries is the Craft Beer industry. We at Flatirons Soap Works love to make beer soap because it is sooooo good for the skin and the process is challenging plus great fun. Flatirons Soap Works has been selected to be one of the few vendors at May’s Bacon and Beer Classic in Denver. We have teamed with Breckenridge Brewery to create a signature soap for the Classic. We have combined Breckenridge’s Vanilla Porter with the bacon lard from the signature bacon and created a wondrously luxuriant bar of soap! We also created a vegan version of this soap for those who don’t like bacon. Although I can’t imagine who that would be!
To avoid confusion, we added a cute little pig to the top of the bar made with lard.
Other fun soaps we are creating include:
Flatirons Soap Works makes the best beer soap. This week we made more.
Using beer instead of water to make soap, beer will offer a light scent with all natural ingredients. The beer in beer soap has some added health benefits. Beer soap has ingredients that moisturize, fight acne, repairs hair. Beer is made up of hops, barley, malt and whatever herbs, fruits, spices and grains the brewer choose to include. Hops contain polyphenols which are thought to account for its anti-bacterial and preservative effects. Hops also contain skin -softening amino acids and are known for their relaxing properties. Beer soap has a much better lather than soaps made with water.
The taste of beer translates to a much lighter scent in the soap, so FSW adds a few fragrance oils or essential oils into the soap mix. For instance, if a chocolate stout is used for soap making, a touch of vanilla and or cocoa powder is added as a compliment to the chocolate undertones.
When I go to the store to buy soap, I find that there are very few soap products are actually soap. Most “soaps”, shampoos or body washes are synthetic detergent products. They have more in common with laundry detergent than with real soap.
Real soap is made from combining oils, fats and lye. The reaction that takes place when these ingredients are combined is called soponification and the result of that reaction is soap and glycerin. Once the soap mixture has been prepared it’s poured into molds to saponify for a day, taken out to dry for a day, and then cut into bars of soap and left to cure for 4 – 6 weeks more. It’s as natural as soap gets. Glycerin is left in the soap because it attracts moisture to the skin.
Look at the ingredients on an average bar of soap in your local store. Many contain sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), anionic surfactant used in laundry detergent. SLS will ry out and irritate skin. Many commercial “soaps” also contain sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), a cheap foaming agent that has been known to be contaminated with a suspected carcinogen Dioxane while being manufactured.
It is the consumer’s responsibility to read the label! Manufacturers may call their product “soap” even if it contains no soap at all!

WHAT IS ACTIVATED CHARCOAL?
As you know, Flatirons Soap Works has products containing activated Charcoal and you should know what these products can do for you!https://flatirons-soap-works.myshopify.com/collections/all/charcoal
Activated charcoal is carbon soot that’s been treated to give it a sponge-like structure, with lots of holes. If you enlarge an image of activated charcoal, you will see it’s very jagged and irregular, giving it a larger surface area This enlarged surface area is particularly handy for soaking up substances.
In skin care, there isn’t anything on your skin that you want to stay on there when you’re ready to wash your face (except maybe good bacteria, but they multiply quickly), so it’s OK to use it regularly. A normal cleanser removes surface dirt and oil through the use of surfactants like synthetic detergents, syndets (synthetic products) or soaps . But these cleansers don’t really get into pores. A side note here – yes, almost all commercial soaps and cleansers are synthetic detergents (imagine washing your face with Tide!)
Activated Charcoal Cleansers and masks are able to draw dirt and oil from the pores. Thus keeping the skin clear and healthy.
